A peace treaty was never signed between AMD and NVIDIA! They had been battling it out quite intensely with one trying to nail the other with their graphic accelerators. And it didn’t start yesterday, right from the NVIDIA Geforce 8 Series, AMD had been packing timely punches, in the form of competitive alternatives! Thanks to the strife, graphics hardware enthusiasts have been playing around, whilst enjoying some really top of the brass graphic experience.
The most recent about three months back NVIDIA raised the curtain from their GeForce GTX 680 to accelerate positive reports and an endless tale of gadget recommendations, reaffirming their thronefor the most agile single-GPU graphics card in the process. And did NVIDIA just smoke out AMD?? However officially AMD is not baptizing the Radeon 7970 GHz Edition as a counter to the GTX- 680, mark it for the sake of the glory hour this is indeed AMD’s response to GTX 680.
It would be an injustice if you call the Radeon HD 7970 a clean-cheat upgrade to the existing Radeon HD 7970 as far as the performance and functionality is concerned .The hardware is an absolute carbon copy to the GPU no significant change to the PCB, nor cooling sectors, or the VRM panels, not even a molecule change in the Tahiti GPU that was packaged with the 7970s when the day broke. Thus the only accomplishment in the new release would be the chip binning and the fresh catalyst and BIOS features which is exclusive to the HD 7970GE.
To bottle up , other than the introduction of the PowerTune Technology with Boost and clocking the clock speed there has been no other changes to go Ga-Ga over RADEON 7970GE. With the same aesthetics and physical components mechanism, it’s pretty much the same 7970, albeit better tuned and chiseled. Anyway, with clocks and ticks now stalled, let’s talk about competitive practicality, availability and pricing. As we already pinned during the introduction the 7970GE is a aimed at the GeForce GTX 680. Honestly, NVIDIA didn’t edge anything more than 10% with the GTX 680, and to take the impact AMD is sprinting at it with a higher clocked Tahiti division. Practically speaking, on a given day AMD can only tie with the GeForce with good performance scaling .
However, it is yet too early to comment if the inherent heating issues have been addressed during this release. Which has been quite a pain area for the RADEON HD series and we are sure, time will definitely reveal this. AMD claims to have worked on the heating front with the PT Boost and the upgraded memory clock. This is definitely re-assuring.
Finally, while general card availability is good – we have experienced already that most 7970s can overclock to 7970GE speeds – AMD has already started shipping the cards and the UI testing on the Game consoles have kick-started with some positive response . The stock is quite well maintained and we don’t see a reason as to why AMD shouldn’t meet the market requirements. It is time for you to go checkout the AMD Radeon HD 7979GE, the Memphis! As some call it sweetly.
