With the launching of one of the most waited OS of this year, many feel that the best possible technology is here. Mountain Lion OSX 10.8 was launched earlier this year on 25th July with a bang. The main reason for it to reach to such a large mass is its price, which has been kept as just $20. Even if the price is affordable to the users of Mac, but one pinch is that you can only purchase it through online app store of Mac, you cannot buy it from a retail store or the apple store.
Though there are many reasons to be happy about this new techno beast, but everything in this world cannot be perfect. As such this OS has no such drawbacks or negatives but there are some points which you should consider before purchasing it.
As soon as you purchase your brand new Mountain Lion, it gets downloaded. There is a requirement of a code which they send to your mail. The problem which many users have felt is that the mail of the installing code never comes, and when you complain for the code they say its already been taken. So this is one of the major problems which are faced by the users.
Another problem is that you need all the software plug-ins to be signed and authorised by apple. Even if you are doing pretty small and everyday things in your Mac like movie making, tools for design & music requires some extra plug-ins while working so this creates a problem. In this OS apple is the decider of all the functions which can & cannot happen in your mac. The speed requirement for the download and installation of Mountain Lion is a little high.
Recovery mode which present in almost every OS which apple has launched, is hardly used. But in this OS the Recovery HD does not have some basic icons. The brightness of your system may also get affected when it reboots or wakes from the sleep, the screen becomes dull even if you didn’t give such a command. Java manuscript sometimes will work in Safari and sometimes it may not, so you shouldn’t rely on its easy running fully.
The major issue which has been reported by the users of this latest OS is depleting battery life of their mac book. Many have complained that their machines were working perfectly when they had the predecessor of Mountain Lion, but when they installed it the battery life decreased dramatically. Some have even reported seeing their battery drain from the icon in front of their eyes. As the stats are to be believed, around 20% of the battery life has been affected. In other words before installation the life of Mac book (without using any apps) was seen to be 4.5 hours; but after installation the battery life of Mac book, in the same situation, was recorded as 3.5 hours, which gives us a difference of one hour before and after installation. When this was reported to apple, they didn’t comment on it. But now the technical support of apple is taking this issue seriously and is working to resolve this issue.
For your printer to be in same configuration with your Mac book so that it prints, you need to have upgraded printer drivers. Another thing is that Rosseta won’t work in Mountain Lion. Rosseta is a dynamic binary translator which was launched by apple with a function to support the Intel based programs to run on your Mac. Now this feature has been deleted from Mountain Lion and even if you try to run any such application which requires Rosseta, it’ll show a warning that Power PC applications are no longer supported.
If we see it altogether, there is nothing really new in Mountain Lion. Many of the 200 features which are introduced are mostly upgrades. Some of them which are added as new are the ones people don’t generally use or consider as very important. Major upgraded apps include Safari, Mirror and face time. These apps were also present in the Lion version of the OS, and in the new version they have just added some little changes to make them a little different from the previous ones. Like in Safari, the colour of the URL has been changed into grey and black and the famous ‘http’ has been removed; so now you can just type www for your desired web destination.
As for the new feature which includes messaging, an option of turning of the beep sound of the message is not present.
Instead of these issues, you can still give a shot to Mountain Lion. Though many features are not different, but still they do give a differential edge to it.
