"Anonymous" hacker: We can close your website

In a videotaped interview with CBS News on Tuesday, Commander X, who asked that his identity be hidden, said, "The power of Anonymous is that we have the ability to effect change on the Internet. You have a site online -- all of a sudden, we snap our fingers and that site is gone."

The statement came after Anonymous have D-DOS NATO website and breached NATO security and accessed a trove of restricted material Thursday Afternoon.

On Twitter, Anonymous said that it would be "irresponsible" to post most of the data. However, Commander X told CBS News that Anonymous plans to release every NATO document it has in its possession.
"Anonymous ALWAYS releases EVERYTHING we take...eventually. But with these big classified dumps we like to take our time analyzing exactly what it is we have. That way we can do the disclosures in such a way as to maximize the political impact of the release."

Anonymous posted a PDF file on its Twitter page showing what appeared to be a document headed "NATO Restricted" and dated Aug. 27, 2007.
"Hi NATO," the group teased on Twitter. "Yes, we haz more of your delicious data," hinting that more would be released in the next few days.

A NATO spokesman said "NATO is aware that a hackers' group has released what it claims to be NATO classified documents on the Internet," NATO spokesman Damien Arnaud told Postmedia News in an e-mail. "NATO security experts are investigating these claims. We strongly condemn any leak of classified documents, which can potentially endanger the security of NATO allies, armed forces and citizens."

On Tuesday, the FBI conducted multiple raids and arrested 14 suspects in connection with December attacks claimed by Anonymous on PayPal, the Internet payment service that had stopped processing donations for Wikileaks.

Linux kernal Gets Three Digit 3.0.0 RC1 , Microsoft Contributes Among Top Five on the Changes !!

Linus Torvalds announced an RC1 release of the next Linux kernel , but instead of calling it the expected Linux 2.6.40, it's dubbed Linux 3.0. The final Linux 3.0 will coincide with the 20th anniversary of Linux in August, but will offer no great breakthroughs, says Torvalds.

Torvalds posted the 3.0 RC1 as a 93 MB download on the kernel.org mailing list at about 6 pm PST, marking a major new phase for the open source operating system. There has been a debate for some time whether it was time to move up from the 2.6 versioning, possibly to 2.8, for some time. The general notion among Linux kernel contributors has been that it would be a good time to leave some of the old and no longer needed features behind along with the 2.6 version number.

Linus wrote on the Linux Kernel Mailing List, "3.0 will still be noticeably faster than 2.6.39 due to the other changes made (ie the read-ahead), so yes, the regression itself is fixed."

Linus also hinted that the next kernel will be 3.1, "This obviously also opens the merge window for the next kernel, which will be 3.1. The stable team will take the third digit, so 3.0.1 will be the first stable release based on 3.0."

Microsoft Contributes on Linux Kernal Changes!

It's strange. Microsoft has been patent trolling the heck out of the Linux kernel for a long time now, and is still using these patents against Android today in its protection money scheme. However, as LWN.net illustrates, Microsoft makes quite a few contributions to the Linux kernel. Shouldn't this invalidate their patent claims?

LWN.net regularly investigates and summarises the various contributions to the Linux kernel, making lists of who contributes the most. Now that version 3.0 of the Linux kernel is about to hit the big wide world, it was time for another one of these investigations.

Microsoft proposed a total of 361 changes to the Linux kernel, putting it in seventh place on the list of companies contributing the most to the kernel. To give you an idea - Red Hat provided 1000 changes, and Intel 839. Independent developers contributed 1085 change sets.

What Are the Changes !!

Obviously, many can expect major changes from this new kernel numbers, but the truth is that version 3.0 of Linux will be a launch without any drastic change. Do not expect something as seen in GNOME KDE 3 or 4, is not this what Linus wants at the moment.

Any bug fixes will be there, some updates on the drivers too, but that's it. Do not expect changes in the API, do not expect new features, do not expect a long list of changes in the source code that may end up breaking other programs that make use of the kernel.

At the time, Torvalds is just really want to leave for a new version of Linux. And avoid the hundreds of problems that occur when a project is launching a new version ".0", with bugs, compatibility issues, and the like.

Apple Considering a Bid For Hulu : Rumors or True !

The day wouldn't be over without a rumor about Apple and today is no exception. It's been said that Apple with $76.2 billion cash & securities on its books is planning to make a bid for the online video streaming service, Hulu.

Apple Inc., with $76.2 billion in cash and securities on its books, is considering making a bid for the Hulu online video service, two people with knowledge of the auction said.

Hulu is owned by NBCUniveral, Fox Entertainment, Disney-ABC TV Group, and Providence Equity Partners. They offer films and shows in non-HD and HD formats via flash video format on its web site.

Hulu would give Apple a new subscription service and represent a possible challenge to Netflix Inc. Hulu’s media- company owners, Walt Disney Co., News Corp. and Comcast Corp.’s NBC Universal, are offering suitors a five-year extension of program rights, including two years of exclusive access, people familiar with the matter said earlier this week.

Instead of a subscription, Apple’s iTunes media store offers TV shows and movies for rental or purchase. Current- season shows can be rented for 99 cents and high-definition films rent for $4.99. Hulu, which inserts ads into programs, offers limited free episodes and more expansive access with Hulu Plus for $7.99 a month.

If sold, Hulu would retain its exclusive content licenses from current owners Disney (where Steve Jobs is a major shareholder and sits on the board) FOX/News Corp., and Comcast/NBC.

US Department of Defence Have Own linux Distro .[download link available]

Lightweight Portable Security is a LiveCD distro designed by the US Department of Defense to purpose as a secure end node, in other words, a safe environment from which to access the web or a remote desktop host. The focus is on security, and for this reason, it boots from a CD and executes from RAM, providing a web browser, a file manager and a few other small tools.

The idea behind it is that government workers can use a CDROM or USB stick to boot into a tamper proof, pristine desktop when using insecure computers such as those available in hotels or a worker’s own home. The environment that it offers should be largely resistant to Internet-borne security threats such as viruses and spyware, particularly when launched from read-only media such as a CDROM. The LPS system does not mount the hard drive of the host machine, so leaves no trace of the user’s activities behind.

Light-weight Portable Protection (LPS) makes a safe conclude node from reliable media on nearly any Intel-based pc (Computer or Mac).

A new maintenance release was announced earlier this week and is accessible via the web. Changes: fixed a problem with iMac Radeon video drivers; fixed problem with trackpad not working on older MacBooks; Rdesktop - enabled compression to improve performance, fixed problem with cursor control keys not working properly; updated NVIDIA display driver to version 275.09.07; added UVC USB web camera support; added minicom 2.4 as a serial port terminal emulator under the Communications menu; updated Firefox to 3.6.19; updated DOD Configuration add-on to 1.3.1; updated Gmail S/MIME add-on to 0.5.2; updated Flash to 10.3.181.34."

Anonymous: We Owned NATO ! [Image added]

NATO (Atlantic North Treaty Organization), e-Bookshop, had suffered a data breach. A hacker group called Team Inj3ct0r claimed responsible for targeting a NATO server with a private zero day exploit.

"Yes, #NATO was breached. And we have lots of restricted material. With some simple injection. In the next days, wait for interesting data," the group tweeted via the @Anonymous IRC feed.

According to the report by The Hacker News, their reasons for hacking is the development and financing of nuclear weapons. The documents contain budget information for a new Joint Communications Control Center (JCCC) within the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), a NATO-led mission in Afghanistan. Various other Anonymous-affiliated accounts claimed to have lifted a gigabyte worth of data from NATO servers, so presumably more document releases are on the way.

By way of evidence of the hack , AnonymousIRC has released two PDF documents, also posted links to two documents.

1.The first, dated 2007 and marked “Nato Restricted”, purports to be a working paper on communication systems at the Joint Communications Control Centre for ISAF forces in Afganistan. It includes detailed procurement estimates and technical information.

2.The second document, dated 2008 and also marked “Nato Restricted”, covers proposals for outsourcing communications systems for Nato forces in Kosovo.

Anonymous also warned NATO not to "make the mistake of challenging Anonymous.

According to theregister.co.uk
"NATO members were warned last month of increasing threats from hackivist group Anonymous. Looks like their advice was right."

The hackers have attacked websites including those of the CIA and SOCA, and infiltrated networks belonging to Sony, security companies and the broadcaster Fox. Earlier this week LulzSec hacked into The Sun newspaper website and published a fake news story claiming Rupert Murdoch had died of metal poisoning.
