In the world of SEO, the only thing constant is – change. Those who adapt to the changes will survive and those who cannot will fall by the wayside. Google Panda and Penguin updates have shaken the SEO world and the ever present threat of a Google crackdown has actually happened!

The latest Google Panda updates and Penguin update has affected all types of SEO practices – black, grey and white. The collateral damage is as severe as the targeted damage – there are many white hat SEO sites that have lost significant amount of traffic and SERP positions, directly because of these updates. Google algorithm and its significance:

They also constantly change the relevance/weight age of the influencing factors to keep the SEO practitioners guessing. This is a “cat and mouse” game played on the grand internet canvas – SEO experts try to reverse engineer the algos and over optimize on the most influential factors, while Google constantly upgrades/updates its algorithm to keep the SEO Practices honest.

Recent Google algorithm updates:

Most of the Google algo updates are minor in nature and may not always affect the SEO practices of most webmasters. But from time to time, Google introduces significant changes in its algorithm, which can throw a spanner in the SEO practices. Here is a list of the most recent(significant) updates and their effects on SEO practices.

Panda: Google Panda updates are a series of significant algorithmic changes that are aimed to eradicate bad quality websites with bad content, no trustworthiness, bad user experience, bad layout/design and abnormal link optimization. The series of changes started from February of 2011 and continue till date. The latest Panda update roll out was on 27th April 2012 (Panda 3.6).Experts indicate that there are more Panda updates in store for webmasters.

Monthly/minor and algo up-gradations: Panda updates were interspersed with the regular algo updates and most of them were minor in nature. Amongst these, the February 2012 pack update and January “ads above folds” updates are the most significant ones.

Google Penguin: Penguin Update was introduced on 24th April 2012 and is also considered to be a major, SEO shaking update. It is an extension of the over optimization changes that Google Panda introduced but with more relevance to link quality, link spamming and link anchor text over optimization.

Google Penguin and its relation to Panda:

Google Penguin is a scary monster because it affects all types of SEO practices black, white and grey alike. Till date, it has been an accepted norm to optimize backlinks with “money” keywords as anchor text – the money keywords being those that are actually used in the websites. Penguin has unleashed a penalty spree on all websites that has higher percentage of anchor text optimization in their links.

Link relevance is best established when backlinks are generated/originated within the same niche of the website. So, Google expects webmasters to have a high percentage of relevant links but at the same time, not over optimize on anchor text. This combination of factors is not only contradictory in nature, it is also very difficult to be “simulated” or practiced as an SEO activity. Quality of a backlink is established based on the authority and importance of the link originating source.

Penguin updates cannot be viewed in isolation – even thought their impact is independent–they have to be clubbed with the Panda updates and viewed as a whole. This is because there is a lot of relevance and relation between these two independent updates.

Understanding Google Penguin:

Three major factors that Penguin addresses are:

Anchor text: It is still early days since the penguin release but early indications point out a complete website penalty on sites that have higher percentage of money keyword anchor texts. If websites have more than 60% of their inbound links with money anchor texts, they are most definitely going to be penalized. If it has not already happened, it will happen in the coming days, for sure. For example, websites with larger money keyword groups are less affected than those that contain one or two money keywords in the anchor text. This not only denotes more importance to anchor text diversity but it also indicates that Google prefers broad niche websites over target niche ones.

Link Quality: Link network/farming and public networks are already on their way out – thanks to Panda. If anything, the Penguin update has hastened their demise. It is a well known fact that Google prefers high quality links but the penguin updates have realized the ever present threat of a Google crackdown or penalty on low quality links. Penguin calculates the quality of the back link in a much more profound way, which was not in existence till a few days ago. Google expects the majority of the backlinks to originate from high authority pages or at least good quality pages.

Link Relevance: Link relevance has not received so much importance as it is enjoying right now. Make no mistake – Google has always indicated that link relevance is important but it was willing to overlook this aspect for aged and good content sites. Google penguin has clearly indicated that Google will penalize sites that have majority of non relevant links. Natural backlinks come from varied sources and majority of them would come from niche relevant sources and that is what Google wants – less SEO on backlinks or even NO SEO on backlinks.

How to recover from Penguin penalties:

The first step is to analyze and understand the reasons for the Penguin penalty. Identifying the reasons will not be a difficult task. Here are some tips that can help in this process – check for these:

Does your site:

- Have more than 50% of backlinks with money keyword anchor texts?

- Too many “Spam links” – low quality links? Do you have more than 50% backlinks of this quality?

- Do you have high percentage link velocity to your site? Is the velocity consistent or is it sporadic?

- Do you have at least 20% of relevant backlinks?

- Do you have more than 70% of backlinks that are niche relevant?

- Is your website optimized for a broader (comparative) niche? Does it hold content and quality relevance to the end user (organic search visitor)?

Penguin updates are algorithmic changes and so, are uniformly applicable for all websites. It is quite possible for a legitimate white hat site to also be penalized without recourse, as a direct result of Penguin.

The best recovery steps are:

- Diversify anchor text: Anchor text diversity must be maintained at a safe ratio of 50% money keywords and 50% relevant but non-money keywords. The best non money keywords are“www.yourwebsite.com”,“yourwebsite.com”,“yourwebsitename”,http://yourwebsite.com” and http://www.yourwebsite.com.

- Dilute/concentrate link quantity: If you have more percentage of low quality links, it is imperative to include good quality links in decently large numbers.

-Percentage: SEO’ers must keep it to a ratio of 70:30 – 70% being good quality and 30% being PR0 and similar quality. 

-Link relevance: Link relevance percentage must always be associated with the good quality links. Amongst the good quality links (70% as mentioned above), at least 25% must be niche relevant and this percentage cannot be more than 80%. It is safe to maintain link relevance at 25% to 30% on overall backlinks.

CONCLUSION

Truth be told, the latest Penguin and Panda updates have been a long time coming. They are the natural and logical responses that any self respecting market leader would resort to. Most of the SEO practices were too brazen and left humungous footprints in the SEO realm. All said and done, Google search technology is just a logic/result based statistical algorithm. However, SEO is always a “work in progress” and “knowledge that is incomplete”; webmasters will have to constantly upgrade their skills and knowledge to successfully survive in the SEO world. Oracle Releases Java 7SE with lot of Bugs ! [Download Link]

The Java 7 platform has finally been release as a final version. This is an important release for Oracle as they have made no major updates since December 2006. In addition, this is the first release for Oracle since they acquired Sun Microsystems in April 2009 for close to 7.4 billion dollars. 

The release is the first in five years, a point that did not escape the attention of Oracle's chief Java architect Mark Reinhold when a release candidate was made available earlier in July.

Oracles aim is to remove uncertainties about Java’s future. Oracle gave particular focus on this during a press release, declaring that Java SE 7 is the result of a large industrial development with collaboration taking place between Oracle engineers and members of the OpenJDK community.

The release includes improved support for dynamic languages, multicore-compatible APIs, and additional networking and security features. Oracle said in a statement it is the culmination of "industry-wide development involving open review, weekly builds and extensive collaboration between Oracle engineers and members of the worldwide Java ecosystem".

The interaction possibilities with files systems have been improved, network security functions have been added and software libraries have been updated to support Unicode 6.0.

However, the Apache Lucene search engine project management committee (PMC) warned on Thursday that Java SE7 contained bugs that could cause a Java Virtual Machines (JVM) to crash or affect applications.

Oracle has also assured users that this new system will be compatible with previous versions of the platform and has invited developers to use version 7 of the development environment integrated into NetBeans, Eclipse Indigo with the Java SE 7 plug-in or IntelliJ IDEA 10.5. Compatibility of Java SE7 functions is planned to be released later in the year for Oracle JDeveloper.

Oracle is in a patent dispute with Google over Google's implementation of the Java-based Dalvik virtual machine used in Android.

"Java has had a long runway to dominate the mobile space and while it was prevalent for a time, most developers have shied away from it. Even strong backers like RIM and Nokia have begun to move to HTML and JavaScript as the preferred development language," 

. "Oracle has far too much to worry about, and Java, while it continues to be a force in many other types of platforms, is gradually losing the mindshare of the developer in mobile."

Oracle's decision to take small steps is probably wise as Java has such a large enterprise following. Oracle claims 97 per cent of enterprise desktops run Java and says the software framework has nine million developers worldwide, so baby steps are the order of the day.

Create a simple landing page. White paper. No flashy graphics just a couple of lines to put your text in.

Personal Testimony.

Write your personal testimony. Include your picture. Audio or video are good too. Just make it personal, how this product helped you create your success.

Now you don't want to fake it. People can tell. Be for real about it. Find a product that works for you and talk about your success and prove it. If you can't prove it don't bother with this method.

Sell your story not the product. Have links to the product affiliate page for front end sales. Call to actions every few paragraphs. 1 to 2 pages long and make a good head line.

Autoresponder.

Have 2 Opt-In boxes. One in the middle, one at the end. Give them a in depth review of the product for opting in. Since you bought the product, you will be able to write a better review then 90% of the other affiliates promoting it. But your not going to give this to them right after they opt-in.

Also have links to the affiliate page or bonus offer page inside your articles and in the signature. The last email in the sequence will be the deadline for your bonus offer. I will talk about an optional step later.

Thank them, tell them to check their email for the review yadda yadda yadda, you know the drill.

But talk about the special bonus report they will get if they buy the product through this special link below. Don't just get some PLR content. Write something unique that compliments the product you're promoting and offer it as a bonus. Create a sense of urgency by saying this is a limited time offer and could be removed at anytime. The better your bonus the better you will convert.

Hint: People go nuts for video bonuses. When you have people requesting if they can buy your bonus report alone you know your bonus is really good.

Tell them what to do.

On the thank you page, bonus page and deadline page tell them buy the product then email you the receipt number to get their bonus.

Or

Have a separate opt in box right on the page for the bonus provided they give you the order confirmation number. You see by having them opt in for bonuses your creating your own buyers list and buyers buy again.

Maybe if they are smart enough or if they're really trying to get over on you. It does happen. If your bonus is complementary to the product they would still need to buy the product so make sure affiliate links are in the bonus. I don't have time to go through confirming all my bonus request. I go as high as 30,000 but generally try to stay low since its easier to rank for less competitive keywords.

Start with ezinearticles.com. After your articles pass their strict standards, you will have no problems submitting to other article directories. Find a good submitter to save yourself some time.

Create a squidoo lens. Have some content about your niche. Link back to your landing page. Syndicate your ezinearticles.com author RSS feed on your squidoo lens. Digg, delicious, stumble, mixx, cloudtag, etc and submit your lens and author rss feeds to sites like feedagg.com or millionrss.com

Create a wordpress blog on your domain name. Blog your articles on your site. Monetize your articles with links to your affiliate or landing page. Have an opt in box on the navigation bar. Adsense is a waste of money in my opinion. I'd rather capture emails and earn affiliate commission rather then sending my traffic to some other site for few cents a click. Its up to you. Whatever works best for you.

Seo. Get your site on the first page for your product keyword.

Make sure your landing page is optimized for your product name keyword. On your landing page have links to your on site blog, privacy policy, contact page, disclaimer, and have a resource page. Link to some authority sites on your resource page like wiki. As you start trading backlinks place your links in here and on your blog.

Focus on getting backlinks. There are so many ways to get backlinks but thats for another lesson, but here are a few idea.

Videos make for good backlinks and people should treat videos like article submissions. If you don't have screen cap software or web cam software windows has a movie maker called Windows Movie Make that will allow you to make picture slide shows with music and convert them into videos. Submit then to all the top video sites. Blog your videos

Article marketing. If after 30 days of writing 2 articles per day you start getting a few sales and have a steady flow of traffic. Now for the next 30 days write 4 articles per day :-). Invest your profits and hire ghost writers to help you with some of your content. The best writers are at elance.com but you can find writers that will charge you $2 to $5 an article elsewhere but you get what you pay for.

Find other blogs related to your niche primarily blogs that focus on adsense or similar for their earnings. Write an article and email them letting them know you've written exclusive content for their blog they can use provided they linkback to your site somewhere in the post. Make sure its good content and most will publish it. Offer them a link in your resource section

Final Thoughts.

Once people opt-in to your buyers list, take them off your main list. You are already bombarding them with enough emails. I only broadcast to my buyers list. You want to pamper them. Only send them useful content and every once in a while when that new hot product your promoting comes out send a broadcast and make money with the push of a button.
