SFD represents about 500 teams’ worldwide organizing events to discuss about the importance, benefits and usage of Free and Open Source Software on the same day: September 17th this year! It's also an opportunity to preach to your local community and gives them ideas and reasons about why they should care and use FOSS."

FIPS-certified BlackBerry PlayBook: First tablet to be certified for U.S. Government use

Research In Motion (RIM) announced today that it has received FIPS 140-2 certification for the new BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet, making the BlackBerry PlayBook the first tablet certified for deployment within U.S. federal government agencies. No other tablet on the market has gained FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) certification from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which is required under the Federal Information Security Management Act of 2002 (FISMA).

Scott Totzke, who runs Blackberry’s security division at RIM said.:
“This certification demonstrates our continued commitment to meeting the needs of security-conscious organizations and enables the US federal government to buy with confidence knowing that the PlayBook meets their computing policy requirements for protecting sensitive information,”

The BlackBerry Playbook might have received a load of criticism after its release given the fact that it packs a ton of shortcomings. The U.S. government however thinks differently, certifying it to be the first tablet that will be used officially by the government itself.

The small 7-inch flash-enabled tablet has received Federal information Processing Standard(FIPS) certification is a powerful, ultra-portable tablet that fits comfortably in one hand, offers true multi-tasking capabilities and a high-fidelity web experience. It also allows for secure pairing with BlackBerry® smartphones via the BlackBerry® Bridge™ app, which enables users to access their BlackBerry smartphone’s email, calendar, address book, memo pad, task list, BBM (BlackBerry® Messenger) and browsing functionality using the larger display on the tablet.

The FIPS-certified BlackBerry PlayBook tablet is being showcased this week in Washington DC at FOSE – the largest Federal government information technology conference in the U.S. – where BlackBerry PlayBook has just been awarded Best in Show, and also Best of FOSE in the Handheld Devices category.

RIM’s most famous product, the Blackberry, is already well-established in the US government. President Barack Obama is a big fan, and uses a version modified to meet his security requirements.

Report: Facebook Is Most Hated In USA.

Facebook is the most hated of online social, search and news sites, according to the newly released annual e-business report by American Customer Satisfaction Index

The survey measures customer satisfaction of companies involved in social media, Internet search and news.
The report comes as Mark Zuckerberg hits television today to defend Facebook, and was conducted before the widespread introduction of Google+.

Facebook scored 64 on a 100-point scale, which puts the company in the bottom five percent of private sector companies and in the same range as airlines and cable companies, "two perennially low-scoring industries with terrible customer satisfaction," according to the results.

Wikipedia tops the social media category for a second year, up 1% to an ACSI score of 78, and is the only social media site to beat the e-business (75.4) and national (75.6) averages for customer satisfaction. Wikipedia benefits from its nonprofit position in the sense that users are able to surf, create, and edit content without any intrusion from commercial messages.

Google-owned YouTube comes in second place at 74 (+1%), well behind leader Wikipedia. YouTube is the dominant player in the online video space, with a market share approaching nearly 50%. A reason for YouTube’s continued high level of viewer preference seems to be the site’s effective response to new competition by teaming with other media to include films, TV episodes, and free broadcasts of sporting events.

One year ago, the ACSI began measuring social media websites, and the industry’s debut was not impressive. Inaugural results revealed rather weak user satisfaction. In 2010, the category earned a score of 70 on ACSI’s 0 to 100 scale. This year, not much has changed. Overall customer satisfaction stays flat at 70 and the largest sites show only slight improvement. Social media websites remain one of the lowest-scoring categories when it comes to customer satisfaction. Only airlines, subscription TV, and newspapers do worse in ACSI. User concern about privacy, including being targeted for advertising, continues to be problematic for social media websites.

"Anonymous" hacker: We can close your website

In a videotaped interview with CBS News on Tuesday, Commander X, who asked that his identity be hidden, said, "The power of Anonymous is that we have the ability to effect change on the Internet. You have a site online -- all of a sudden, we snap our fingers and that site is gone."

The statement came after Anonymous have D-DOS NATO website and breached NATO security and accessed a trove of restricted material Thursday Afternoon.

On Twitter, Anonymous said that it would be "irresponsible" to post most of the data. However, Commander X told CBS News that Anonymous plans to release every NATO document it has in its possession.
"Anonymous ALWAYS releases EVERYTHING we take...eventually. But with these big classified dumps we like to take our time analyzing exactly what it is we have. That way we can do the disclosures in such a way as to maximize the political impact of the release."

Anonymous posted a PDF file on its Twitter page showing what appeared to be a document headed "NATO Restricted" and dated Aug. 27, 2007.
"Hi NATO," the group teased on Twitter. "Yes, we haz more of your delicious data," hinting that more would be released in the next few days.

A NATO spokesman said "NATO is aware that a hackers' group has released what it claims to be NATO classified documents on the Internet," NATO spokesman Damien Arnaud told Postmedia News in an e-mail. "NATO security experts are investigating these claims. We strongly condemn any leak of classified documents, which can potentially endanger the security of NATO allies, armed forces and citizens."

On Tuesday, the FBI conducted multiple raids and arrested 14 suspects in connection with December attacks claimed by Anonymous on PayPal, the Internet payment service that had stopped processing donations for Wikileaks.

Linux kernal Gets Three Digit 3.0.0 RC1 , Microsoft Contributes Among Top Five on the Changes !!

Linus Torvalds announced an RC1 release of the next Linux kernel , but instead of calling it the expected Linux 2.6.40, it's dubbed Linux 3.0. The final Linux 3.0 will coincide with the 20th anniversary of Linux in August, but will offer no great breakthroughs, says Torvalds.

Torvalds posted the 3.0 RC1 as a 93 MB download on the kernel.org mailing list at about 6 pm PST, marking a major new phase for the open source operating system. There has been a debate for some time whether it was time to move up from the 2.6 versioning, possibly to 2.8, for some time. The general notion among Linux kernel contributors has been that it would be a good time to leave some of the old and no longer needed features behind along with the 2.6 version number.

Linus wrote on the Linux Kernel Mailing List, "3.0 will still be noticeably faster than 2.6.39 due to the other changes made (ie the read-ahead), so yes, the regression itself is fixed."

Linus also hinted that the next kernel will be 3.1, "This obviously also opens the merge window for the next kernel, which will be 3.1. The stable team will take the third digit, so 3.0.1 will be the first stable release based on 3.0."

Microsoft Contributes on Linux Kernal Changes!

It's strange. Microsoft has been patent trolling the heck out of the Linux kernel for a long time now, and is still using these patents against Android today in its protection money scheme. However, as LWN.net illustrates, Microsoft makes quite a few contributions to the Linux kernel. Shouldn't this invalidate their patent claims?

LWN.net regularly investigates and summarises the various contributions to the Linux kernel, making lists of who contributes the most. Now that version 3.0 of the Linux kernel is about to hit the big wide world, it was time for another one of these investigations.

Microsoft proposed a total of 361 changes to the Linux kernel, putting it in seventh place on the list of companies contributing the most to the kernel. To give you an idea - Red Hat provided 1000 changes, and Intel 839. Independent developers contributed 1085 change sets.

What Are the Changes !!

Obviously, many can expect major changes from this new kernel numbers, but the truth is that version 3.0 of Linux will be a launch without any drastic change. Do not expect something as seen in GNOME KDE 3 or 4, is not this what Linus wants at the moment.

Any bug fixes will be there, some updates on the drivers too, but that's it. Do not expect changes in the API, do not expect new features, do not expect a long list of changes in the source code that may end up breaking other programs that make use of the kernel.

At the time, Torvalds is just really want to leave for a new version of Linux. And avoid the hundreds of problems that occur when a project is launching a new version ".0", with bugs, compatibility issues, and the like.

Apple Considering a Bid For Hulu : Rumors or True !

The day wouldn't be over without a rumor about Apple and today is no exception. It's been said that Apple with $76.2 billion cash & securities on its books is planning to make a bid for the online video streaming service, Hulu.

Apple Inc., with $76.2 billion in cash and securities on its books, is considering making a bid for the Hulu online video service, two people with knowledge of the auction said.

Hulu is owned by NBCUniveral, Fox Entertainment, Disney-ABC TV Group, and Providence Equity Partners. They offer films and shows in non-HD and HD formats via flash video format on its web site.

Hulu would give Apple a new subscription service and represent a possible challenge to Netflix Inc. Hulu’s media- company owners, Walt Disney Co., News Corp. and Comcast Corp.’s NBC Universal, are offering suitors a five-year extension of program rights, including two years of exclusive access, people familiar with the matter said earlier this week.

Instead of a subscription, Apple’s iTunes media store offers TV shows and movies for rental or purchase. Current- season shows can be rented for 99 cents and high-definition films rent for $4.99. Hulu, which inserts ads into programs, offers limited free episodes and more expansive access with Hulu Plus for $7.99 a month.

If sold, Hulu would retain its exclusive content licenses from current owners Disney (where Steve Jobs is a major shareholder and sits on the board) FOX/News Corp., and Comcast/NBC.
