The notion of going to sleep when the sun went down is ancient in its origins. Back in the days before electricity there was very little that could be done once the sun’s natural light had disappeared for the evening. This meant that people used to go to bed early and get up early – hence the Franklin remarking that “early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”.
There is a lot to be said in going to bed early these days; I’m not suggesting you go to sleep as soon as the sun goes down. But you should try to get into bed at least an hour before your usual time, try it for a week and see how much difference it will make. Research has shown that those who get between 7-9 hours’ sleep every night are healthier, live longer and are mentally sharper during the day.
Cut Down on the Salt and Sugar
When people go on diets it is very common to hear how they cut out full fat milk or fried foods; and sure to a certain extent they’re right, fatty foods should be consumed in moderation. However fat isn’t your worst enemy when it comes to weight gain that falls at the feet of sugar mainly because you’re consuming a lot more of it. This sweetener has managed to find its way into a lot of what we eat from the obvious chocolate to the less obvious bread.

Walk More
You’ll frequently read these types of articles that insist that you have to join a gym or sign-up for a marathon before you’ll start to get fitter and healthier. I don’t buy that though, you don’t need to do either especially if you’re only looking to get healthy not uber healthy.
I will say that obviously some form is required in order to get fitter but it just doesn’t have to be as inconvenient as those two options. My advice is just walk to work instead of getting the bus, if you live too far away then how about walking a few stops further. I’m sure that you could fit around 40-60 minutes of walking into your day.
