Since the earliest of ages, piracy, scrupulous practices and abusing the very place where people make their living or visit for entertainment is present. In today’s world, internet is such a place where people can share knowledge, information or just browse for their own entertainment. And with this comes the old symptoms of fraud or uncalled behavior. Whenever we any some websites that promises us through advertisements or notification that we are the 5000th visitor and we have won a certain amount of money, or some even ask us to invite visitor and if we are successful in bringing a certain number of visits to that site we could win a certain amount of money as a patronage from the owner of the site. Many have fallen prey to these serious pranks or scrupulous activity but seldom this type of advertisements cease to exist. It is we who must know what they are actually intended for so that we may be safe from the ‘thieves’ of the internet.
Whenever we visit a page it is always recorded with our digital footsteps. The number of visitors can be displayed publicly at some sites but more often we do not know the amount of footfalls a certain website receives. It is in some of such sites where these ad campaigns lay their trap to make us a prey, for may be some harmless tricks or often some bigger case. Actually whenever a website records our footsteps it generally shows the traffic of the page. And it is a well-known fact that in today’s world where everything in internet search engines is refined by SEO techniques that impacts the popularity of the website. SO such advertisements actually lures us in increasing the traffic of the website and it is highly the chance that we would not be pay for it as nobody is liable for it. Instead some spam sites get better ranks in the search engines due to increasing number of visitors who are lured by one. There are second motive for many such advertisements. These are particularly harmful ones. They actually make us visit their website and providing a link where the ’lucky winner’ would claim their prize, they actually tries to steal personal information like bank details, or personal accounts or any such sensitive data where it may be socially or financially embarrassing for the ‘winner’. There are also sites who with more number of visitors, encourages more post and as a result becomes search engine friendly themselves without sharing anything substantial with the visitors even in form of knowledge, information or entertainment. Sometimes even we receive mails about some distressed damsel, or sick millionaire, or some refugee who has by “luck “ got into contact with us and offers us to share his/her fortune in equal parts if we help them out. A user should be well aware of the fact that seldom emails work that way or any other institution which promises to send us millions if we provide them with personal details.
Internet is the virtual world which in a way resembles the real world in many ways. It is because of the immoral and abuse of some fraud or spinster who wants to make quick money cheating on other that this type of claims are frequent in many websites. We as a responsible user should always be wary of them and report them to the webmaster or owner or even search engines. The negative publicity and responsible usage can only defeat spammers and create a better place in the virtual world.
