Safely Donate for Sandy

I recently saw an image posted on my Facebook wall about two people swimming in almost neck-deep water, trying to get hold of some strong pole so that they are not swept away by the rising water due to “sandy”. It was mentioned under the image that donate as much you can for Sandy, and then a girl comments, ‘”they are in so much trouble, and it is our duty to contribute. But please tell which Sandy is among the two??” It was funny for me too but I also realized that how much trouble the Sandy affected people is and still many people do not know ‘who’ or what is Sandy. Sandy is the name given to the super storm and is 18th among the other named siblings. It is the 10th hurricane of the 2012 season and the largest Atlantic storm having a wind span of over 18oo km. the recent devastating attack by this phenomenon has piled up an estimated loss of more than $50 billion USD that has only been surpassed by its sister Katrina and affected the life of the people in Caribbean, Mid-Atlantic and North-eastern US in around 10 days.

The aftermath of the Sandy has been great and the various government and NGOs have dedicated every bit of their expertise in fighting of the devastation as much they can. They are getting every bit of help in terms of food, or clothes, or money for the great cause from every bit of the World, but there are also some people who are taking advantage of the situation and collecting money for their own selfish enjoyment. I have myself seen that there are people who take advantage of the situation and goes out in road collecting money from every one that ends up in their own pocket. So it is better to be safe while donating and trust on a reputed donor organization so that the money we donate could be put to the right cause. Here is a list of a few trusted establishments that can help us and are reachable through the internet.

American Red Cross - Though they got criticized for their slow start after the Sandy subsidized they are still the best one to put their resources to the maximum use and tirelessly providing services to the thousands of affected people. Already they have collected around $85 million through the National Football League and television concerts.

Brooklyn Community Foundations – They have already started their relief service to the people and working 24 X 7 to provide support for the affected mass. The trust started the relief work by donating $100,000 and has pledged more from the noted names in the area.

Community Food bank of New Jersey – They have started to distribute food and clothes and are providing shelter to many of the homeless feature. We can reach them through internet.

Habitat for Humanity – This foundation helps the affected areas by trying to evaluate the effect of the storm. They will assess the situation and would be providing the resources to rehabilitate the places at affordable cost.

Humane Society of United States – They are sending their animal rescue team for the re-location and help helping the survival of the animals in the storm hit areas. The will providing service for the pet and domesticated animals.

Mayor’s foundation to Advance New York City – The donations made to this organization will be diverted towards the immediate needs of the citizen that includes food, blankets, water supply and hygiene of the homeless. They would be proving one per cent of the donations to this cause. Also once the preliminaries are done they will use the funds to the restoration of the city and will encourage the initiative taken in for the developments.

Salvation Army – They are going hand-in-hand with the American Red Cross and are providing service to millions of people in the New York and New Jersey area by keeping a constant supply of food, water, hygienic supply, and even communication. They are also providing spiritual care for many in their hard times.

Save the Children – It is an initiative taken towards the children keeping their health and their condition in the worst hit areas in mind. They are providing health relief along with food and warm clothes to help them. The institution is also conscious about giving a conditional shelter to many kids for playing and to recover from the emotionally distressing situation.

United way – This is the fundraiser created keeping the short term and the long term needs of the people in most part of the country. They will meet out the requirements of the needy people even after the storm.

These are few of the societies that are trying to erase the emotionally disturbing memories of the people of the relentless storm affected people. We should lend our hand of support for them and help at their time of needs. This is a call for humanity and we have a chance to show that there are people who do care.
