Hobbit-not-an-Outright-Winner

J.R.R. Tolkien is the writer who has given the children something to ponder on, through his Lord of the Rings series. The only negative we can say about it is that it is lengthy and reading through it is definitely not a child’s play as it tends to be boring the readers at point. The Hobbit is the story that has been written by the same author who made it precise and takes place before the Lord of the Rings takes place. But the movie which was made with high definition imagery and other modern facilities cannot be said that it made quite a mark as expected. When Lord of the Rings was made into a film it did exactly what it was supposed to do. The movie trilogy cut out all the long and endless narrative and the actual happenings were portrayed in a grand manner. The war sequences were good and the graphics were better. But the Hobbit tries to create a grand illusion which failed to capture the imaginations of the audience. But it is not only that. There are quite a number of flaws that was quite unexpected from The Hobbit: The unexpected Journey.

The Hobbit shows an younger Bilbo Baggins, the famous hobbit from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, who was tricked by Gandalf, the Grey to host a party for the Dwarfs where he learns about their glorious plan of reclaiming the “lonely Mountain” and prove their ownership over its vast treasure from the dragon Smaug. Bilbo got himself associated to the group for this noble cause. During their journey Bilbo gets separated from the group but meets Gollum and the famous ring and is able to keep of Gollum using the rings special powers. He is reunited with the group, more reputed and trusted among his group. Later through the various parts of the journey Bilbo saves his companions from many vices and enemies and reaches the land of Man. They learn about the dragon and its vulnerability and later the dragon is killed by the lord of the man and Thorin the leader of the dwarfs claims his lands. There was some war of the egos which resulted in Bilbo getting banished along with the town people and war seems eminent. But following Gandalf’s warning of an army of adversary to both they reconcile and the famous war of the five armies was fought, though Thorin gets seriously injured. The Goblins and Wargs were defeated and Bilbo returns home as quite a wealthy Hobbit.

his is the basic story which is quite compact on its own. But when made into a movie it went terribly wrong. There were unnecessary introductions with long narratives that are not at all helpful to bind the film together. Also the 48fps that promised to provide more depth and visual clarity and amazement was too much as the graphics seemed not that rich. A few of the characters were presented whose real intentions were never clear as they keep confusing the audience and makes them wonder why they are there. Let us admit the fact that Lord of the Rings has very few characters who were of consequence and took the center stage and easier to remember them, but the inclusion of a vast casting that has literally nothing to do with the story only increases the head count and doesn’t boost up the storyline. Also the original story is quite small and adapting it to make a movie is not that easy and should have been realized by the production house, so at point with all the glossy finishing touches and endless support cast all seems quite unnecessary and gives an impression that someone is trying to hide the hollow storyline. The war scenes were not that impressive and we keep losing track among the endless river of names of the key defenders and leaders of the dwarfs which creates quite a nursery rhymes with their names better than their on-screen heroics. The props and outdoor locations which were supposed to create a gripping experience proved too much and the escapes sometimes looks like strolling in the park rather than battle for survival and the HFR technology lacked the intensity that can make an edge of the seat experience.

Though there were some short burst and cameo role that stands out than the other things in the movie. The acting of Serkies as Gollum and that of Freeman was crisp and just points out to the fact about why the directors have such faith on them. But overall it is a movie which is definitely bigger but not that better and underlines the fact that too much of cook spoils the broth.
