After dropping support for the free version of Google Apps, Google continues to disappoint users who do not pay. The service works with Exchange ActiveSync synchronization is no longer available for users of Gmail and Google Apps for free, but the connections are still functioning.
"Google Sync was designed to allow access to Google Mail, Calendar and Contacts via the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync® protocol. With the recent launch of CardDAV, Google now offers similar access via IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV, making it possible to build a seamless sync experience using open protocols. Starting January 30, 2013, consumers won't be able to set up new devices using Google Sync; however, existing Google Sync connections will continue to function. Google Sync will continue to be fully supported for Google Apps for Business, Government and Education,"says Google.
Three other services and applications are no longer available: Google Calendar Sync (download link has been removed, but the application still works for existing users), Google Sync for Nokia S60 (which is no longer supported in the January 30, 2013 ) and SyncML (Synchronization stops January 30, 2013).
While Android owners are not affected, those using iPhones, Windows phones and other mobile devices will have IMAP, CalDAV and CardDAV. Sure, they are standard protocols, Google has not paid the license fee, but the application does not support the thrust of Google. If Apple iCloud, Yahoo Mail and AOL Mail are compatible with drive, why not add to Google? The Gmail app for iOS push notifications, but some people like to use the standard email client.
If you already have Google Sync enabled on a device, it will continue to work. Unfortunately, you will not be able to enable Google Sync in a new unit of 30 January.
