Internet tycoon Kim Dotcom will launch a new file-sharing site at his Auckland mansion on Sunday, exactly a year after armed police arrested him at the same venue in the world's largest online piracy case.
Dotcom announced via Twitter that users will receive 50GB of free storage space, enabling them to store large video files on new venture, mega.co.nz.
The free storage being offered by Mega far exceeds that offered by other current online consumer cloud storage and file-sharing sites such as Dropbox, Carbonite, Google Drive and Microsoft's SkyDrive, which offer from 2GB to 7GB of free capacity on signup.
Dotcom has also noted that Mega users who jump over from his former MegaUpload project will not receive premium status back at the time of launch. Kim says he plans to give original service users premium status but can not move forward with that plan until he receives ”court permission or a case resolution.”
What we do know is that Dotcom will be taking the wraps off his new Mega service more officially this Sunday in New Zealand. Stay tuned
